Ideal plants to grow in summer

Discover which are the best plants to grow when the temperature rises

Sunlight is essential for plants to carry out photosynthesis, but not all plants can withstand the summer heat in the same way. To avoid the frustration of seeing them lose vitality, you need to understand which species can best survive the heat.

From flowers, to fruit, foliage and herbs, there are many plants that adapt well to hot days, and we recommend five to get you started in your own garden!

1. Cacti and succulents

Among the most beloved houseplants, cacti and succulents are ideal for any environment, indoors or outdoors. They require little care and do not need to be watered often, because their leaves, stalks and roots absorb and store water for many days.

Cacti are more hardy, while succulents can turn yellowish or have fewer leaves if they spend too long in the sun. That’s why it’s important for them to be in a spot where the sunlight isn’t as strong. In addition, they should be planted in a planter pot with holes in the bottom, so that the plant can breathe.

2. Strelitzia

Hardy and requiring little maintenance, Strelitzia can be grown in full sun or half-shade. It should be pruned every six months to encourage flowering.

3. Alamanda

Alamanda is a type of trumpet vine with beautiful yellow flowers. It is a great option for arbors and fences, but should be avoided indoors and kept out of reach of children and pets, as it is a toxic plant. It also needs to be watered often and grown in full sun.

4. Fruit Trees

Jabuticaba, mango and acerola, in addition to being delicious, are great options for the summer. The shade from these trees can offer a place for rest and leisure on hot days. Both jabuticaba and acerola can be planted in pots, which lets them adapt to smaller spaces. They only need a little care to keep them healthy, such as pruning, frequent watering and full sun.

Mango trees also don’t need much space to grow, contrary to what many people think. This plant also adapts to pots and, like other fruit trees, needs to be watered frequently and get a good dose of sun to develop.

5. Herbs and seasonings

How about starting a vegetable garden at home? Rosemary, thyme and basil are excellent options for small spaces and also require only simple care. When planting a rosemary seedling, you should always keep the soil damp. But as soon as it grows, you need to control the soil drainage.

Thyme and basil, on the other hand, should be watered when the potting soil is dry, to prevent root rot and yellowing leaves.
