Pet-Friendly Gardening
Discover which plants are safe for your four-legged friend
You know that beautiful Snake Plant arrangement that you saw in a decoration magazine and thought would look perfect on the bathroom floor? Well, it may not be the best idea if you have a pet at home.
Some kinds of plants are harmful to cats and dogs. Apart from the snake plant, devil’s ivy, dumbcane and alocasia are examples of species that can cause serious problems if they are swallowed or chewed by pets, such as allergies and poisoning.
So, when the time comes to build your urban jungle, you need to pay attention to the type of plant that will be accessible to pets, especially puppies and kittens. If it is
unavoidable, grow them in hanging spots, preferably using brackets or hooks on the walls or ceiling or creating vertical gardens.
Preferably, choose species that are harmless to pets, such as violets, orchids, ferns, succulents and bromeliads.
Even so, if your pet begins to feel ill after chewing or eating some plant, don’t try to medicate: take your pet to the vet immediately along with the ingested plant.
