Learn how to make your cast iron pan last longer

Cast iron pans are some of the most charming kitchen utensils. It doesn’t seem to matter what the dish is: food always has a special taste when it is made in one of these!

However, cooking with a cast iron pan requires some special care – starting even before first use.

First step
The first thing to do is to hand-wash your cast iron pan with a soft sponge, using mild soap or detergent. Next, dry it well, grease the internal surface with oil or fat and heat it for one or two minutes. Then let it cool, wash it again and you can start using it.

Cooking

Heat up the cast iron pan before adding food is crucial to keep it from sticking. So, get used to leaving the sauce pan on low or medium heat for 3 to 5 minutes before you start cooking. To stir food, only use silicone, nylon or wood utensils.

Rust spots
Over time, your cast iron pan may start to show rust spots. Don’t worry: just apply oil again and place it over heat until it smokes. Wash it with a soft sponge and mild detergent. They add water and let it boil.

When storing

Cast iron pans are very sensitive to moisture. As such, after use, dry it completely with a soft cloth and always store it in a dry, well-ventilated place, away from steam or any moisture. Applying a little oil to the sauce pan before storing it also helps with upkeep.

By following these tips, your cast iron pan will be a star in your kitchen for a long time!
